Stop the Retro Madness!

It's almost becoming more of a cliché to criticize nostalgia than to produce it, so I thought I'd give you this nostalgic Salon article (reg. req.) without the usual homage to my superiority. As it turns out, this is actually almost impossible to do, because the images themselves (see right) are so consistently reproduced as examples of that ironic retro-chic that they ironize themselves. Will irony itself some day be the mark of our generation's nostalgia? I doubt anyone's going to pine for the good ol' 1990s days of tapered jeans and The Spin Doctors, but I could see a bunch of Gen-X-geezers, in twenty five years or so, pining for the days when ironic 1950s retro images were young. How confusing.
