Dead Soviet Bus Stops
What is it about remnants of the Eastern Bloc that's so appealing? Some of these bus stops look vaguely postmodern, but with fifty-odd years of being weatherbeaten. Others look exactly like 1972 ski sweaters Grandma knitted for you. Unlike the grand old edifices of Europe, which speak of extravagant and ornate pre-histories, these cruddy little hovels embody memories of a past that is almost, but not quite, accessible (at least for me). Maybe its just the way the once bright colors fade, like those photos of when you and your parents were kids. You reach the point when, if you weren't there, you think the past may have been all vaguely sepia (and who can say it wasn't?)
Ah, the faded glory of the past.
When I was backpacking through Russia, I caught buses at a number of bus stops that looked like these ones. Such melancholy, yet compelling, places.
