English up with which I Will not Put
In honour of the countless Yoda-esque sentences I've marked over the past week, I've decided to offer this link, which goes through some hotly debated grammatical items (You know you're a word nerd when....) Did you know, for example, that "till" was actually in use before "until"? As a result of common usage, many of the issues you've been dinged for on essays are much more fluid than your Orwell adoring proffies would like to admit. To quote many of my students: "A person is entitled to their opinions." Though my eyes roll back in my head and I start convulsing when I hear that particular one, I wonder if some day a student will be entitled to legitimately use his/her egregious agreement errors.
