A Different Modernism
Perhaps, given its name, it shouldn't be surprising that many have never heard of the work from the SOCIÉTÉ ANONYME, which is currently being featured in the UCLA Hammer Museum, but this LAWeekly article provides a stunning glimpse into an alternative modernism that was taking place in the 1920s. In the review/historical overview, Doug Harvey discusses "the thousand artworks the S.A. managed to amass over the years" and how they constituted "nothing less than an artist-curated, nonhierarchical, spiritually tinged alternative to the history of Modern Art in America as understood through the megalomaniacal Rockefeller-sponsored filter of MoMA’s Alfred Barr." Imagine a world where talent overruled the interests of the wealthy.
